Championship Update

August 7

Congratulations
Eun Jeong Seong!

The Championship is over and we are thrilled to congratulate Eun Jeong Seong of the People's Republic of Korea, who won the Championship on the 36th hole of match play against Italy's Virginia Elena Carta in dramatic fashion. It was a beautiful day on Sunday, as was most of the week of the Championship. The golf course was the real star of the show as it played beautifully and showed beautifully on Fox Sports live TV coverage. The membership at Rolling Green has much to be proud of. Great job to all!

Friday's action at the US Women's Amateur Championship saw 4 exciting quarterfinal matches. In the end the winners were Virginia Elena Carta of Italy, Yuka Saso of Philipines, Mathilda Cappeliez of France, and Eun Jeong Seong of the Republic of Korea.

Also exciting to note is that Rolling Green caddies are still in the mix.

img

img

img
There's nothing like having the home field advantage of a Rolling Green caddie who knows this course! Good job to all the Rolling Green caddies who made it into match play rounds with their golfers! And good luck to Tom and Kevin who are still in it!

There were many spectators today watching the action, both members and non-members.

img

img

Corporate Sponsors, who were a vital part of making this Championship happen, also enjoyed the day, especially seeing the Robert Cox Cup trophy (like Baker Printing).

And a special treat today was having more than 40 girls from local LPGA-USGA Girls Golf programs participate in an Inside the U.S. Women's Amateur event. Click the image below to see the video!

August 3

Wednesday, August 3 was a super exciting day at the 2016 Women's Amateur Championship!

The day started off with the completion of the playoff for the final spot in the field of 64 who would begin match play. This spot was won by Muni He, see picture below.

img

Muni He went on to defeat the #1 seed Mariel Galdiano in a very exciting match that went 22 holes! Click on the image below to see the read the article about their match, produced by the USGA.

img

The day also featured 31other matches that were a delight to watch. At the end of the day, the field was narrowed to 32 ladies.

David Staebler, Member of Rolling Green and Director, Rules Education for the USGA had some thoughts about The Importance of Hitting the Fairway:

Wednesday morning on the 11th hole, five players continued the playoff started Tuesday evening for the 64th and final spot in the Women’s Amateur match play draw. Three of the players drove their balls in the fairway, one in the right rough and one in the fairway bunker. All three players who hit the fairway, hit the green. Both players who missed the fairway failed to hit the green, one going into the front left bunker, the other coming up short of the green and rolling back down the slope to the right edge of the fairway. Neither of them got up and down for par. Two of the three players that hit the fairway and hit the green in regulation made pars. The third player who hit the fairway and the green, 17 year old Muni He from the People’s Republic of China, ran in a twenty foot birdie putt to secure the 64th spot in match play. As we all know, it’s hard to score well at Rolling Green when you miss a fairway.

You can also check out this video that David Staebler & the USGA filmed right on the Rolling Green golf course regarding Concessions in Match Play:

And finally, we hope you were able to check out Rolling Green on Fox Sports if you were not able to come to the club today. It was really neat to see how beautifully the course was showcased. Here is a reminder of the Fox Sports TV schedule.

August 2

Today was the most exciting day of the Championship so far! The second round was played by every golfer, the end of which resulted in the field being cut down to only 64. But before that happened there was a lot of excellent golf to be seen.

img
Fox Sports, which begins broadcasting tomorrow, was getting prepared with numerous vehicles carrying cameramen around the course.

img
The sun came out late in the afternoon as one of the last groups was finishing on Hole #14.

img
Many spectators were taking in the terrific golf as some of the last groups finished on Hole #9.

img
The crowd got thicker and thicker as the scores were posted. It was exciting!

img
The USGA calligrapher who writes the scores on the scoreboard was super busy!

img
Stacy Collins of the USGA, congratulates Mariel Galdiano of Pearl City, Hawaii for shooting a Championship-record 9-under 133. (68 Monday, 65 Tuesday). Wow! How cool!

img
The crowd gathered at #10 again as a 9-for-5 playoff was needed to determine the final 64 players to advance to match play on Wednesday.

img
The spectators enjoyed a beautiful sunset on the 10th green as the playoff was happening. But because of the lack of light, the playoff will finish tomorrow morning at 7:15.

Rolling Green Golf Course - spectacular!

If you haven't been to the Championship yet, plan to join us tomorrow for match play as the excitement and unbelievable golf continues...
